Blast From The Past: 944 Turbo

FR layout, 220 hp and near 50/50 weight distribution... Numbers that are still relevant today but pretty damn impressive over 20 years ago in 1986.

The 944 Turbo is also widely speculated to be the design inspiration behind the FC RX-7 and pretty much sets the performance format for 90s-era Japanese FR sportcars.

Car Porn Up North

I was drinking last Friday night and Steve asked if I want to head up to Sepang for a track day. I said "Sure, when?" and the bugger said "Tomorrow morning 730am"

With my usual lack of judgement, I found myself blasting through the North South Highway in his STI the next day at 220km/hr and climbing... It got too shakey to take anymore photos after that.


Some say inserting this CD into your car's stereo will add up to 10 bhp...


We stop over at ST Wangan at Sunway as his Scooby's rear undertray got a bit loose and need to be fixed up. Can't say I mind as there's always plenty of automotive porn on display in the area.


Displayed proudly upfront was this R34 GTR with Volks rims and carbonfibre aero side-mirrors. I don't think my picture did it justice as it was just plain awesome in real life!

P.S. The car belongs to Leonard over at The Clipping Point. Funnily enough, I seen his car in his blog so many times but don't recognize it when I see it in the flesh. As I said, pictures just don't do it justice!


Plenty of old school love as well. I believe this is a old Toyota coupe but I don't know the model Mazda RX3. Please help me out here?


In general, Malaysia's tuning scene has turned distinctly JDM and performance focused over the years, but apparently this ricer V35 Skyline with the horrendous widebody and GTR emblem is not getting on with the program.


When we hit Sepang, Steve and the rest of the drivers were listening to the safety briefing while I decide to wander the pits and saw these babies!

Oh my god, what great luck for me to chance upon the joint testing weekend for GT3 Asia and the GT4 Asia Cup 2010 season. Above are Team IMSS' trio of Ferrari F430s. Driver Andrew Luk claimed the fastest time on a damp track when he clocked 2:17.221. Pretty hairy stuff!


Team Craf brought along a Fiat Abarth 500 "just for fun", it wasn't part of the test session so I didn't get to find out how fast this thing could go around Sepang.


A "bunch" of 997 GT3 Cup S. One of them is driven by Singaporean Mok Weng Sun. The Team PCS Racing driver will be competing in both the GT3 Asia series and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. Mok set the second fastest time of the weekend, with an unofficial time of 2:07.812.


Team SPS Racing. made their appearance as the biggest group at the circuit with five Lamborghinis and their driver Choi drove the sensational new Lamborghini LP 560 GT3, setting the fastest time of the 2:07.400

It was great fun getting up close and personal with the GT racecars. Now if we can only get our street cars to this level of performance... :)

The Race Of A Lifetime At Singapore Changi Airport

Singapore Changi Airport is revving up for the Changi GP Festival in September. Airport visitors can look forward to a month of race-related activities starting with the Changi Airport Race – the first-ever jetliner versus car race in Asia. The race on 5 September 2009 will pitch a Porsche Carrera Cup race car against a Boeing 747 aircraft from Singapore carrier, Jett8 Airlines, to determine the speed king of the tarmac.

Two hundred grandstand tickets are up for grabs for fans who wish to hear and experience the race up close on the tarmac of Changi Airport. Members of the public who spend a minimum of $30 in a single receipt in the public areas of Terminals 1, 2 or 3 from 15 August to 23 August 2009 will qualify for a lucky draw to win a pair of tickets. Besides the grandstand tickets, another 500 tickets will be available for an exclusive live screening of the race at the public area of Terminal 3. Ticket holders will also be invited to enjoy the festivities at the airport on the race day.

It's not just the prerogative of girls to color coordinate their outfits. Apparently guys should do that with their Porsches' rims and side mirrors as well.

And in case people mistake yours for a run-of-the-mill 997, proudly proclaim the edition number with hugeass side decals in aforementioned colour scheme.

Yellowbird versus Godzilla Battle Royale

The R35 GTR is undoubtedly a work of technical perfection.



It is the fastest production car at the 'Ring at 7:27 (the old timing of 7:29 was broken a few days ago)

But after watching the R35's hot lap above, contrast that with the icon that started the 'Ring production car time attack craze, the Ruf CTR Yellowbird.



Yes, the technologically advanced GTR is a whole 30 seconds faster than the 1987 Yellowbird, a non-electronic-assisted-anything, twin-turbos, rear-wheel-drive battle chariot.

But tell me, which footage makes you clench your fists, sit at the edge of your seat and pray that the car don't crash? And amazingly, it doesn't.

Yes, I will never drive even one-tenth as well as Nissan’s Chief test driver Toshio Suzuki.

But that doesn't stop me from being in awe of the steel balls of the unknown maniac that drove at eleven-tenths for 8 minutes. In traffic.

A Facebook friend ask me to check out his car pictures and viola~ You can't go wrong with a Boxster 987S beefed up with a M's GT3 bodykit. The car hugs the tarmac courtesy of a H&R PASM lowering kit.
In addition to this striking red cabriolet featured which he tracks around Sepang sometimes, the lucky guy also has a drift ready S15 which we'll feature some other day. Spot the subtle yet cool Singapore GP decal on the rear fender and the Gemballa carbon fibre spoiler.

Hmmm, should I take the red, black or yellow today?

Whats better than driving the car you love? Cruising down the streets in style together with your buddies, who also happen to be driving Porsches. Life ain't so bad!

Matt Black Malaise

The American rat rods started the matt black style way back in the day, as the general idea was to focus on the engineering and racing aspects while giving the finger to looks.

In recent years, the Japanese revive the look with Rauh Welt being arguably the workshop most associated with the style. If you have been following the Japanese car scene, you would have seen Rauh Welt's matt black Porsches and S15 at one point or the other.

I like this look to a certain extent and some people have carried out the look well in Singapore, such as:

The local R35 photographed by Vanq that caused a storm in Singapore, percolated over to NAGTROC and even Speedhunters.

I even have a friend that sprayed his S15 matt black a la Rauh Welt and given that the guy thrash his car regularly at Sepang, you know the looks are suitably cool.

This Porsche Carrera isn't half bad either.

Performance cars going fast, looking tough and incognito. That's all good.

But when I see Kia Ceratos, Honda Crossroads and other econoboxes doing the look, with CHROME RIMS adding to the insult, you just know that it became just too much of a good thing.

GT3 RS Wannabe

When I say 'wannabe' in the title, its relative to the uber GT3 RS, with my tongue firmly in cheek. :)

Yet another fine shining example of the kind of gorgeous cars that taunted me everyday around my work place.

GT3 RS inspired livery. I wonder what its timing around Sepang or PG... With a competent driver, I guesstimate mid 2:20s at Sepang should be do-able.

Exotics at Market Street

Had a really full lunch today and decide to walk it off. Randomly walk around a multi-storey car park near my office and here's what I found:

Lime green E46 M3 with carbon fibre front splitter

Lotus Exige looking increadily small and sleek besides two econoboxes
Porsche Cayman S. The rims look tough and I don't think these are a factory option. I can't recognize them. Any idea?
I think the local Porsche dealer are having some promos on Caymans...

Maserati Coupé - loves the paintwork but the design looks dated compared to the incredibly muscular yet sensual GranTurismo.

599 GTB. It looks totally stock but I guess I can forgive the owner :P

You really gotta wonder what are the professions of these guys around my work area. Wonder if they have an opening available for me...
